Dilwale is a remake of the 1993 Telugu film Nuvvu Nenu, itself a remake of 1986 Hindi movie, Pardesi. The film was produced and distributed by Yash Raj Films. It was reported that Shah Rukh Khan was offered the role of Vikram, however, he refused to be a part of the film. Dilwale was a commercial success, emerging as the second highest-grossing movie of 1994 worldwide, after the super hit Jurassic Park. It became the second highest-grossing Indian film of the year, even though it was the fifth highest-grossing Indian film of all time. The film was a moderate success in India and other countries, but emerged as a popular movie in the international arena. The film was a huge international success, becoming the top-grossing Indian film of 1995 and the 15th highest-grossing film in 1995. In the film, Ajay Devgn plays the role of Gaitonde, a money lender. He takes on the persona of a criminal and uses this identity to the point of which he is recognised as such. He robs the rich to give to the poor and robs the police to protect his clients. He is then caught and sentenced to death. However, Gaitonde has an encounter with a brave young officer called Salim Khan (Sonu Walia). He develops a liking for Salim. Gaitonde, however, soon falls in love with his clerk (Kajol), who is against his roguish lifestyle. Gaitonde, however, does not take the chance to follow his heart. He is transferred to Bengaluru where the two lovers have to come together to stop Gaitonde. He tries to make them see that he has changed. Gaitonde's change of heart is seen when he meets his little brother Shobha (Raveena Tandon), who is the only person that he knows in the world, and also falls in love with her. More than a year after the release of the film, Mani Ratnam started developing a script with Dileep for Dilwale which would have starred Shah Rukh Khan as Gaitonde.
